4.41   Because   of   ignorance   a   person   considers   as   real, the   unreal   objects he   sees   in   the   waking   state   as   in   the   dream   state. None   of   the   things he   sees   in   either   state   is   real.

4.42   Common   people   are   led   by   their   experiences to   accept   existence of   external     objects,   and   they   are   afraid to   deny   that   there   is   birth. Scholars,therefore,   concede   the   possibility of   birth   only   for   the sake   of   such   people,   but   cannot   accede   to this   with   discriminating   people.

4.43   Those   dualists   who   are   afraid   to   deny   birth, and   see   dualism everywhere   around   them,   and   therefore engage   in   dualistic   worship, are   not   to   be   blamed.   Their   mistake   is   bonafide, and   which   may   be realised   by   them   in   due   course.

4.45   Pure   consciousness   appears   to   be   born, seems   to   be   active,and   resembles   a material   object,   but consciousness   is   not   born,   not   active,and   is not   like   any   material   object   and   it   is   quiescent and   without   a   second.

4.46   Thus   the   mind   is   not   born   nor   individual   selves and   they   are   knpwn   as   unborn.   When   this   knowledge is   obtained,   one   does   not   fall   into erroneous   cognition   or   believe   in invalid   knowledge.

4.47   Just   as   one   sees   a   torch   as   sometimes   straight   and   sometimes not,   consciousness   keeps   presenting   itself ever   changing,   sometimes as   subject,   sometimes   as   object,   sometimes   as   cause   and   sometimes as   effect.

4.48   Just   as   presence   of   a   torch   is   not sensed   when   it   is   not   waved, so   too   is   consciousness   not   manifest when   not   within   the   range   of experience   of   teh   senses,   as   if   it     were   not   existing.

4.50   The   figures   traced   by   the   moving   torch are   not   real.   They   are   not   real creations   of   the   torch,   but   unreal   creations of   the   mind,   these   are   appearances without   a     real   existence.
