That   great   sage,whose   wealth   comprised   his   penance,   Viswamitra,
engaged   himself   in   extremely   arduous   penance   for   many   thousands
of   years;   (a   sacrifice)   by   raising   both   hands,   having   only   air   for
food,   in   the   summer   surrounded   by   five   blazing   fires   (fire   on   all
four   sides   with   the   fierce   Sun   beating   down   from   above),   during
monsoon   times   standing   with   the   sky   as   the   canopy,   during   winter
entering   the   waters   and   staying   there,   both   day   and   night   without
respite,   all   this   after   the   celestials   had   departed   (22-24).
