Heaving   sighs   repeatedly,   repenting   and   thereby   steeped   in
remorse,   that   best   among   sages,   noticing   that   celestial
nymph   Menaka   in   a   trembling   state   and   standing   with   her
palms   united   (in   supplication),   discharging   her   with   sweet
words,   the   son   of   Kusika,   Viswamitra,   set   out   for   the
northerly   mountains,   O!   Rama!   What   a   wonder!   (12-13).

That   one   of   great   penance,   having   reached   the   banks   of   river
Kausiki,   having   reasolved   that   he   would   not   give   any   chance
for   the   disruption   of   his   observances,   setting   his   mind   on
unintererupted   devotion,   engaged   in   extremely   arduous   penance   (14).

His   firmly   being   established   in   severe   penance   for   a   thousand
years   in   the   northerly   mountains,   O!   Rama!   kindled   fear   in   the
minds   of   the   gods   (15).

All   the   gods   and   all   the   sages   got   together   and   prayed   to
Lord   Brahma   that   `the   penance   so   far   performed   by   Viswamitra
is   quite   enough   and   he   be   declared   a   great   sage'   916).

Having   heard   these   words   of   the   gods,   the   Grandsire   of   all   the
worlds,   spoke   the   following   sweet   words   to   Viswamitra,
whose   wealth   comprised   his   penance   (17).

`   O!   Son   of   Kusika!   I   have   been   pleased   and   propitiated
through   the   severe   penance   performed   by   you.   I   bestow   upon
you   the   title   `great'   and   the   pride   of   place   among   the   sages.
O!   Great   sage!   May   all   be   well   with   you!'   (18).

wealth   was   his   penance,   with   joined   palms   and   bent   head,replied

`Brahminical   sage'   on   me,   arising   out   of   the   merits   of   the
auspicious   observances   I   have   performed,   then   alone,   I   shall
