O!   Delight   of   the   Raghus!   That   righteous   extremely   radiant
royal   sage   Bhagiratha   too,having   no   offspring,desired   to   have
a   son.   As   one   who   was   issueless,   having   entrusted the affairs
of the   kingdom   to   the   ministers,   he   was   engaged   in   bringing
Ganga   to   this   world   (11-12).

`O!   Delight   of   the   Raghus!   He   engaged   in   long   penance
in   Gokarna,   with   arms   raised,   standing   amidst   fire   on all
the   five   sides,   having   subdued     his   senses,   and   taking
food   once   a   month   (13).

O!   One   of   mighty   arms!   A   thousand   years   elapsed   for   that
high-souled   king,   who   was   thus   engrossed   in   severe   penance.
The   Lord   of   all   men   and   the   master,   Lord   Brahma   was
greatly pleased   therefrom   (14).

Then,   appearing   (before   him),   along   with   the   groups   of   gods,
the   Grandsire   spoke   to   that   high-souled   Bhagiratha,   who   was
engrossed   in   penance,   as   follows   (15).

`O!   Lord   of   the   people!   Greatly   resplendent   Bhagiratha!   I   am
pleased   with   the   well-observed   penance   of   yours.   O!   One   of
excellent   vows!   May   you   seek   boons'   (16).

That   one   of   extreme   radiance,   the   most   fortunate   Bhagiratha,
going   near   the   Grandsire   of   all   the   worlds, replied   to   him
with   folded   hands   (17).

The   ashes   of   these   high-souled   ones,   my   great   grandfathers,
when   made   wet   by   the   waters   of   the   Ganga,   should   attain   the
indeclinable   world   of   heaven   (19).
