`O!   Realised   one!   By   you   has   been   narrated   this   highly
righteous   episode.   You   know   all   about   the   episode   of   the
elder   daughter   of   the   king   of   mountains,   in   so   far   as   it
relates   to   the   upper   world   and   the   world   of   humans   and
as   such   may   you   be   pleased   to   narrate   them   to   us   (2).

When   the   scion   of   the   Kakutstha   clan   was   speaking   thus,
Viswamitra,   whose   wealth   consisted   of   his   penance   (only),
narrated   the   entire   history   (leaving   out   no   detail),   in   the
company   of   the   sages   (5).

`O! Rama! In the days past, that great ascetic, Lord Siva, after having got married, on seeing Goddess Parvati, was engaged in making love to her, out of love for her (6).

In   this   way,   a   hundred   celestial   years   elapsed   but   for   the
blue-necked   one   (Siva),   there   arose   no   son   in   her   (Parvati),
O!   Rama!   the   scourge   of   foes!   (7).

Thereupon,   broken-hearted   were   the   gods,   with   Lord   Brahma   in
the   lead, on   the   thought:   `In   this   union   when   one   is   born,   who

the   welfare   of   the   world!   May   you   be   pleased   to   bless   us
