That best among
kings, the one of great
radiance Viswamitra,
having accepted
these honours from Vasishta
made enquiries by
exchanging pleasantries
about his disciples (of
Vasishta),
activities connected
with penance, the ritual
Agnihotra and
the trees in
the penance-grove. Vasishta also
replied that all
was well in
all quarters, in reply to
that foremost among kings
(4-5).

O! Righteous ruler!
Are you ruling
over your subjects in the
righteous way, keeping
them happy
and are you also discharging
the functions of a king
rightly? (7).
Note: The four-fold
duties of a king indicated
here comprise
of accumulation
of wealth in the right
manner, multipying
the riches
in ethical ways, protecting
the wealth and also
expending it
in the proper manner.
