O!   Rama!   Upon   those   sons   (of   hers)   being   thus   destroyed,
Diti   (who   was)   drowned   in   grief,   spoke   thus   to   her   husband
Kasyapa,   the   son   of   Marichi   (1).

O!   Lord!   Through   the   mighty   sons   of   yours,   I   have   been   rendered in   this   state   with   my   sons   having   been   destroyed.   I   desire   to
beget   a   son,   through   long   and   rigorous   penance,   who   will   be
capable   of   slaying   Indra   (2).

I   shall,   who   has   been   rendered   thus,   observe   penance   and   you
deserve   to   bless   me   with   a   progeny.   May   you   bestow   upon   me
(a   son)   who   will   be   mighty,   a   great   archer,   one   of   settled
mind,   and   one   who   has   the   right   perspective   and   who   would
be   capable   of   destroying     Indra'   (3).

The   extremely   effulgent   Kasyapa,   the   son   of   Marici,   upon
hearing   those   words   of   hers,   responded   thus   to   Diti,
who   was   submerged   in   deep   anguish   (4).

`May   it   be   so,   may   you   succeed   in   your   endeavour,   you   will
bring   forth   a   son   who   will   slay   Indra   in   battle   and   may   you
(therefore)   maintain   purity,   you   who   have   considered   penance
as   wealth   (5).

If   you   maintain   absolute   purity   (in   your   life   and   conduct)   for
a   full   thousand   summers,   you   shall   bring   forth   a   son,   through
me,   who   will   rule   over   all   the   three   worlds'   (6).

(purified)   her   with   his   palm   and   having   done   so,   `may   you
be   prosperous'   said   the   sage   and   he   also   set   out   to   engage
in   penance   (7).

O!   Best   among   men!   After   the   sage   left   the   place,   the   extremely 
happy-minded   Diti   went   to   Kusaplavana   and   performed   a   very
severe   penance   (8).

O!   Best   among   men!   The   thousand-eyed   one     (Indra),   with   all
excellent   attributes,   acted   as   the   man-in-waiting   for   her,
when   she   was   engaged   in   the   penance,   it   is   said   (9).

The   thousand-eyed   one   (Indra),   made   available   (to   her)
holy   grass,   faggots   (for   use   in   the   rituals),   water,   fruits,
roots   and   all   other   required   materials,   as   needed     (for
the   conduct   of   the   austerities)   (10).
