BALA VIDYALAYA'S
DHVANI PROGRAMME
STEP - II : DIAGNOSIS AND ASSESSMENT

1. If all the tests in Step 1 indicate a problem, please take the child to an ENT doctor in the nearest hospital as soon as possible
2. If the hearing impairment is treatable / correctable,  the ENT Doctor will do the needful. If it is not a correctable hearing loss, he will send you to an Audiologist
3. The Audiologist will assess the child by putting him through various audiological tests. He will prescribe a suitable hearing aid for the child, and may recommend a shop from where to buy it.
4. Please buy the hearing aid. The hearing aid shop may have the facility to take the impression of the child’s ear to make moulds for the child. Don’t use ear tips. Custom-made ear moulds are essential. If the shop does not have this facility find where you can have this done.
5. The mould should be ready in a week’s time. Once the ear moulds are ready, please start using the hearing aids.
6. The child may at first refuse to wear the hearing aids, but distract him when you put on the hearing aids and ensure that the child is wearing the hearing aid through out his waking hours.
7. Each time the child tries to remove the hearing aid distract him so that he does not remove it. After a period of three or four days he will stop trying to remove the hearing aids.

8. Remove the hearing aids only when the child is sleeping or having a bath.
9. Please check to ensure that the batteries and the hearing aids are in  working condition every four hours. The normal life of the battery is about a week.
10. Make a harness which is a kind of belt to be worn by the child at his chest level. This harness should have pockets to hold the hearing aid secure. This harness will ensure that the hearing aid does not fall down and is secure
11. The harness should be worn over the top most layer of the Childs clothes. There should not be any cloth covering the hearing aids. It will cause a lot of noise disturbance to the child
12. Hearing aid attracts attention of people. You may have to face  embarrassing situations. People may ask uncomfortable questions. This should not affect you. Your child needs the hearing aids to hear.
13. Start on the early intervention programme. The earlier that you start the better the child will develop.
