1. BUILDING ELECTRONIC ARCHIVES :
Using the Computer Software Package made available to us by the Indian
Institute of Technology, Madras, on Computers available at their homes
or at Vidya Vrikshah's Training Center,
our Volunteers create data files in Indian languages and English
in respect of :
(a) Texts of ancient Indian
religious, philosophical and literary works from books, manuscripts and
other sources, together with their translations and commentaries,
with facilities for search and study.
(b) Presentations in respect of Art and Culture under heads like Music, Painting and Sculpture: A beginning has been made under Music with a presentation on the Melakarta Foundation of Carnatic Music, displaying the notation of the 72 Melakarta Ragas and illustrated by brief sound recordings on the Veena. The structure of this presentation is intended indeed as a model of a foundation on which the super-structure of a comprehensive public archive on composers and compostions of Carnatic Music, can be constructed with the help of votaries, connoisseurs and practitioners of this system of music. It would have facilities to navigate and locate any desired information and other sources of information and also listen to sound recordings. A beginning has also been made with presentations under the head Painting.
2. RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT & TRAINING :
(a) Vidya Vrikshah's Centre for Disability Research, Development & Training is actively engaged in design and development of IT-based Hardware and Software Solutions to meet the needs of Literacy, Education and Skills Training in the Local Laguages, especially of the Disabled in all parts of India. Details of these solutions can be seen on the Website www.intend2001.org.in/ This is the website of INTEND, (INformation Technology ENablers for persons with Disabilities) an umbrella organisation set up to implement the recommendations of the INTEND-2001 National Conference held in Chennai in June, 2001. Vidya Vrikshah functions an Institutional Member & Implementing Agency of INTEND.
(b) Trainers from Disability Training Institutions, Volunteers engaged in Disability-related services and Persons with all types of Disabilities are provided the sound-enabled Software Package of the IIT Chennai, and also Training in its use, free of charge, so that they can run similar training courses in their own homes or places of work, at their own time and convenience, for the benefit of socially or physically disadvantaged people living in their areas.
(c) All the Training Pogrammes are available in Web-based formats and placed on our Internet Web-site, to be available as free, distance programmes in all Indian languages, for the use and benefit of all throughout the country. The information is also down-loadable and available in normal text or Braille that can be printed or embossed in standard English Braille or standard Bharati Braille as prescribed for the Indian languages.
3. OTHER ACTIVITIES :
(a) Popularising the use
of the IIT Software Package for use of local languages in
Public Administration and in Training Services of ground level staff
in the Public Services, and multi-lingual
communication across the country.
(b) Serving as an agency
for feed-back to the I.I.T. Madras, so that the facilities of the Software
Package can be continously improved and expanded in the light of practical
experience gained in the training programmes.
